"I Want You Back" is the starting time national unmarried by the Jackson five.[3] It was released past Motown on October 6, 1969, and became the commencement number-one hit for the band on January 31, 1970.[4] It was performed on the band'south first boob tube appearances, on October 18, 1969 on Diana Ross's The Hollywood Palace and on their milestone operation on December 14, 1969 on The Ed Sullivan Show.[iv]

Originally considered for Gladys Knight & the Pips and later for Diana Ross, as "I Wanna Exist Free", "I Want You Back" explores the theme of a lover who decides that he was also jerky in dropping his partner. An unusual aspect about "I Want Yous Dorsum" was that its main lead vocal was performed by a tween, Michael Jackson.

"I Desire You Dorsum" was released on October 6, 1969[7] and was the commencement Jackson 5 unmarried to be released past Motown[eight] and the first song written and produced by The Corporation, a team comprising Motown chief Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonso Mizell, and Deke Richards.[6] It likewise is the first of four Jackson five number-ones released in a row (the others being "ABC" – 1970, "The Love Yous Save" – 1970, and "I'll Be At that place" – 1970) and the first Jackson 5 vocal recorded in Los Angeles, California; the quintet had previously been recording Bobby Taylor-produced remakes of other artists' hits, including "Who'due south Lovin' Y'all", the B-side to "I Desire You lot Back", at Hitsville UsA. in Detroit, Michigan. The Jackson 5 performed "I Want You Back" during all of their world tours, either as a full song or as a office of the Jackson 5 Medley in concerts (which also included "ABC" and "Mama'due south Pearl", later on switched with "The Love You lot Relieve" in 1973). During their second-ever television appearance (in an episode of The Hollywood Palace hosted by Diana Ross & the Supremes),[nine] the Jackson 5 performed "I Want Y'all Dorsum" along with Sly & the Family unit Stone's "Sing a Unproblematic Vocal", The Delfonics' "Can You Remember", and James Brown's "There Was a Fourth dimension". They also performed the song on American Bandstand and The Andy Williams Prove.[10]

Michael Jackson performed the song every bit part of the "Jackson 5 Medley" (which also included the songs "The Dearest You Save" and "I'll Exist There") during all of his world tours - the Bad World Tour, the Dangerous World Tour and the HIStory World Tour.[11] The vocal was performed live at the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special in 2001, in which Jackson reunited with his brothers on phase for the first time since 1984.[12] The song was to be performed at Jackson's This Is It comeback concerts in London, which were cancelled due to his death.[ citation needed ]

The song has sold six million copies worldwide.[13] In 1999, "I Want You lot Back" was too inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[14]

"I Desire You Back" ranks number 104 on Rolling Stone's list of the '500 Greatest Songs of All Fourth dimension'.[6] It too ranks 9th on Rolling Rock'due south listing of the '100 Greatest Pop Songs since 1963'.[13] In 2020, it was ranked number two on Rolling Stone'due south list of 'The 100 Greatest Debut Singles of All Time'.[fifteen]

According to Acclaimed Music, it is the 45th most historic song in pop music history, and the 2d best song of 1969.[xix]

The single has been awarded Silver certification on August 22, 2014 by the British Phonographic Industry Association.[twenty]

"I Want Y'all Back" has long been considered i of the most sampled songs in all of hip hop music.[21] The vocal has been sampled over lx times since its release[ citation needed ] past artists including Jay-Z and The Notorious B.I.G.[22]

The song was included in the soundtrack for the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.
